Abstract
Marchiafava-Bignami disease (MBD), a rare complication of chronic alcoholism and pathologically characterized by symmetrical primary demyelination of the corpus callosum, is described in a non-alcoholic, not malnourished Korean male who has chronic liver disease (liver cirrhosis and liver abscess). A 61-year-old man, has liver cirrhosis and liver abscess, was admitted due to ataxia, dysmetria, minimal cognitive impairement. A brain MRI shows typical changes, high-signal intensity in corpus callosum, especially in T2 weighted images. A multiple vitamin complex was administrated and symptoms are improved. It is the first case which have occurred in non-alcoholic, not malnourished, chronic liver disease patient. In this case, we suggest that nutritional factors disturbed by impaired liver function would cause MBD.
